Obituary

Known to many as the Angel of Jamestown, Mary A. (McManus) Berthelot, age 81, died on Thursday, August 20, 2020. She was the loving wife of the late Joseph Richard Berthelot. Born in Syracuse, NY, she was a daughter of the late Frederick J. and Agnes R. (Delany) McManus.

Mary was a woman filled with an endless capacity for love and generosity. Always helping others, she became a Registered Nurse (RN), earning her degree in 1960 from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. Over the years, she worked primarily in acute care hospital settings, retiring as a nursing supervisor from Newport Hospital in 2004. Mary, however, never really retired. Just ask all her grandchildren, who stubbed their toes and skinned their knees, only to discover themselves peppered with band-aids, bacitracin, and a “little dirt never hurt” attitude.

Mary volunteered - a lot! Just to name a few, she pulled exhausted swimmers back to shore for Save the Bay, administered flu vaccines at the local high schools, coordinated Jamestown’s Emergency Management Shelters, ran the food pantry for St. Mark’s Community Outreach, and traveled to Central America with North East Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (NEVOSH). It’s hard to capture everything that Mary did for her community, but suffice to say that if there was a neighbor in need, Mary was only one phone call away.

Mary was an extraordinary mother. Orphaned at the age of eight, she immediately became her younger siblings’ fearless advocate and defender. After being separated for many years, at the age of 20, Mary brought her five siblings to live together at the house on Midland Avenue. This house was blessed with countless hilarious stories some of which include alarm clocks, peanut butter spaghetti, and Mary’s first airplane ride. On that day Mary provided nursing care to a patient transported from Syracuse to New York City. She managed to get the patient safely to NYC while also managing to come home with the pilot in tow! Mary married that pilot and they went on to parent a houseful of children, who have since filled their homes with wonderful and greatly loved grandchildren.

Mary’s children are Terry Berthelot (Michael Lynch), Colleen Logan, Carolyn Sion (Edward Sion), Jeannie Hindle, and Richard Berthelot (Kerry Berthelot) and her grandchildren are Katie Lynch, Samantha Logan, Elliot Logan, Max Logan, Grace Logan, Reese Sion, Edward Sion, III, Riley Huntington, Trevor Huntington, Bryce Hindle, Brody Hindle, Luke Berthelot, and Cooper Berthelot.
Mary’s siblings are Frederick Joseph McManus, Elizabeth (Anne) Ball, Sarah (Sally) Hickey, Bernadette Smith, and the late James McManus.

As we remember Mary, in lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to Boys Town New England, 58 Flanagan Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or North East Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (NEVOSH), 191 America Way, Jamestown, RI 02835.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass at 11 am on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 in St. Mark Church, Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. Due to Covid-19, Mary’s life celebration must be postponed, but after Covid-19, the family will host an event to commemorate Mary’s extraordinary life.

Due to current restrictions, church seating is limited. Please wear face coverings.
